Release schedule

With the start of Phase 2, we have introduced early versions of our Freeholds and Marketplaces features, with 3 new nodes expanding the desert zone, the Befallen Forge, 2 new races with the Dunir and Vaelune, along with our treasure hunting system. These are just a few of the new content/features we have introduced at the start of Phase 2. They will be polished and fleshed out as we progress into Phase 2, along with new features and content that are planned for January. The full patch notes will be posted shortly for today's build. I'd like to express thanks to each of you on behalf of the team, for your hard work and dedication in helping us bring Ashes to life. During Phase 1, we learned much about our stability and performance. We went from death walls, to 250+ player battles with thousands of NPCs on the same workers. We went from dozens of worker crashes during our first weekends, to 0 the last few weekends. We saw Realm pop limits at 2k during our first weekends, to now supporting 5k+ per Realm. In recognition of the amazing effort that our testers have provided during Phase 1, I am pleased to announce that I have decided to keep the realms up from December 20th, until January 6th.[1] – Steven Sharif

Testing phases
Ashes of Creation testing phases.
- Alpha-0 was the invite-only "raffle" friends and family alpha test phase.[46][47]
- Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, and Beta-2 were available for purchase during the Kickstarter and Summer crowdfunding campaigns.[45]
- Alpha-1 was available in the Intrepid pre-order pack and the Adventurer pre-order pack.[48][49]
- Alpha-2 and Beta-2 were available during PAX West 2017.[50][51]
- Alpha-2, Beta-1, and Beta-2 were available in Pre-order packs on the cosmetic store.[52][53]
- Alpha-2, Beta-1, and Beta-2 packs that were purchased through Mail.ru can gain access to the testing periods they were entitled to by registering an account with Intrepid Studios and submitting a support ticket.[54]
- Alpha-2, Beta-1, and Beta-2 are currently available in Bundles from the cosmetic store.[55][56]
Intrepid Studios utilises in-house QA teams as well as multiple contracted QA testing houses to test Ashes of Creation.[57]
- We have two contracted QA testing houses that we work with: One in Europe and one in Mexico; and then we have our internal QA teams that are a dozen strong right now as well. So you know, there are many QA testers that we use on the project.[57] – Steven Sharif
- Bots are utilized to assist internal QA testing as required.[58]
- We're finding issues that at scale become much easier to find; and even with real players more so than what we find with our bot testing and or with our QA testing, because QA works in conjunction with our bot testing as well.[58] – Steven Sharif
- All server realms will be wiped prior to launch.[59]
Ashes of Creation
Ashes of Creation takes place within a medieval fantasy setting, blending imagination with cutting-edge graphics. We are putting the word massive back into massively multiplayer with unique and novel mechanics that will bring meaning to player action. Ashes of Creation will incorporate the best parts of traditional MMORPGs with innovative sandbox concepts. You will choose your fate at every opportunity. Questlines will open and close based on the interactions of the players with their world, because this is a world where choice is consequential. Monsters will roam and grow in ferocity as civilization disrupts the natural order of things. From the location of towns to the size of cities, you will determine the landscape of your world. It will be unique in culture, ecology, and economy.[61]
Ashes of Creation is an upcoming MMORPG set in a world of high fantasy where player’s choices will shape and define the world around them.[62]
- Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMO experience. Our world structure is dynamic and built to react to the actions of our players. Cities will rise and fall, their populations based on the history of the world as the players create it. Quests will unlock as these populations gather, their needs grow, and secrets are unlocked. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real time, players will have the ability to destroy what they’ve created, paving the way for new development, new populations, and real change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your world. Gone are the days of static worlds, change is here to stay.[61]
- When we are ready to launch, and I've said this in the past, I believe we are going to be one of the largest MMOs to launch.[63] – Steven Sharif
- The original code-name for Ashes of Creation was The World of Origins.[65]
- Q: When it comes to feedback, which systems in Ashes of Creation will never change?
- A: A game like Ashes is very direct about what it's trying to be. We are telling you what we're trying to build. Now, the results of building that we may not always hit the mark, and that's where we come back and we iterate on something and we take the player's feedback. But what we're trying to do will stay consistent and that is really a dynamic world that is fraught with danger, both player and environment: and that's at the crux of what Ashes is. And on the dynamic world side, things that aren't going to change ever is that a lot of our systems are predicated on player activity; and those predicates are usually surfaced through the node system, are usually surfaced through the world spawn systems; and seeing a world that changes day to day is also the intent. So those are the things that really aren't going to change the dynamism that we predicate world activity off of, as well as the player versus X approach.[66] – Steven Sharif
Alpha-2
Alpha-2 is an alpha. This is an actual Alpha. We are not a game where we're just porting over, or translating to another region. This is a proper Alpha. So, as Steven has stated many times, it's not a game. We are here to test and get things moving along.[68] – Margaret Krohn

Alpha-2 is really the testing grounds for a lot of the more minute details of how a particular system works; and you can change a lot of those details without actually needing to change the feature that's been developed. These are variables that exist within the code that we have control over so that when we want to iterate upon it it's easy to do iterations: and some of those iterations can feel very impactful to the system overall. So Alpha-2 really is meant to gauge this initial approach and then we're afforded the ability to change that drastically by tuning and changing some of the aspects of the specifics of the system.[69] – Steven Sharif
Non-NDA Alpha-2 testing will occur in three phases:[36]
The focus of Alpha-2 testing is on core gameplay loops rather than quality-of-life.[70]
- Quality-of-life features and how they relate, I think this is probably the biggest disparity between our player audience right now, our testing audience, and what the purpose of Alpha phase one and two are. It's not to deliver on those quality-of-life issues. That's just the reality. It is truly an alpha, which means that our focus needs to remain on the base gameplay loops- the core gameplay layers that people are interacting on a minute-to-minute basis.[70] – Steven Sharif
The cadence of Alpha-2 updates will vary based on the type of update: Hotfixes will be deployed as needed. Minor updates will occur approximately every 3 weeks. Major updates will occur approximately every 6 weeks.[71]
By the end of Alpha-2, the game is expected to be feature complete, but will not be content complete until launch.[72][73][74]
In-game support is expected to be present during Alpha-2 to handle a limited range of support issues. Game masters are expected to be in-game at live launch.[75]
- We will have people who will have access to being in-game and helping support if needs be, but our goal for Alpha-2 is we are not going to be assisting at the same capacity that we would be for launch. At launch we do want to have in-game GMS.[75] – Margaret Krohn
The intention of Alpha-2 is to be as persistent as possible, but there may be necessary wipes during testing.[76][77][78][79][73][80][81][82] There will be downtime for upgrades and patches.[79][73][74]
- I do want to be clear that our goal is to not have server wipes in Alpha-2. We want to have persistence. That is the point of the persistence. We may have times where we come down for updates and things like that, but the goal is to not wipe if we don't have to.[79] – Margaret Krohn
- The developers are trying to avoid wiping during Alpha-2 phase 1 unless it is necessary. There will be a full wipe leading into Alpha-2 phase 2.[83][76][77][78]
- We were trying not to wipe during phase one. I think we're going to be good on that front. We saw some database issues over this weekend that was probably affecting anywhere from one to two percent of users, so we didn't feel it was necessary to try to correct that at this stage, given the level of frequency. When it comes to wiping, our intent is for December 20th to be a full wipe day.[76] – Steven Sharif
- Alpha-2 is expected to last until launch and run in parallel with Beta-1 and Beta-2.[84] Alpha-2 realms will then become testing realms for upcoming Beta content, some of which may be covered by NDA.[72][56][73][81]
- Q: Will Alpha-2 run alongside with Beta-1 and Beta-2?
- A: That's correct. So, when Alpha-2 ends, Beta-1 will start; and then you'll see that those realms will change to be more of a test realm that you can see content that's coming up the line. We may even ask people to join that to test things before it goes to the Beta.[85] – Steven Sharif
- Q: Is Alpha-2 access going to result in PTR access?
- A: Alpha 2 is still intended to morph into the PTR. And if you have Alpha 2 access, for any of the phases, you will have access to all subsequent Alpha-2 testing phages, which includes when it becomes the PTR.[72] – Steven Sharif
- All server realms will be wiped prior to live launch.[59]
Beta testing
The Beta-1 and Beta-2 testing phases of Ashes of Creation will be short and will run in parallel with Alpha-2.[84][88]
- Content wise, beta will have nearly everything release will have.[89] – Steven Sharif
- After the betas are launched, Alpha-2 realms will become testing realms for upcoming Beta content, some of which may be covered by NDA.[72][56][73][81]
- Node types will be definitive (finalized) in the betas.[93]
- A first-time user experience system is expected to be implemented during the beta testing phase.[94]
- Beta testing of Ashes of Creation will be closed.[95]
Head start
Head start grants early access one or two days prior to the live launch of Ashes of Creation for crowdfunding backers at the Founder level and above.[96]
- Head start is a means to gradually ramp up the population to avoid player concurrency issues at launch.[97]
- Head start will also be a way to address any last-minute launch or deployment issues.[98]
The point of head start is twofold: One for testing, making sure that the live launch servers pre-wipe are good; and then Two, it's a way to stagger the population move into the game. Because if you have servers with 10,000 concurrent player capability and you have everyone logging in at the exact same time, that is a problem I've never seen an MMO tackle successfully, ever.[97] – Steven Sharif
Headstart servers
The number of head start server realms is estimated to be three. This is subject to change.[99]
Headstart limitations
The game functionality is limited during the head start period so that players cannot decide the world-scape earlier than others.[101]
- During the head start, the node system will be deactivated.[101]
- Head start specific servers are also planned.[101]
- It will not be possible to secure player housing during the headstart period due to the deactivation of the node system.[101]
Head start was not a mistake, I tend to listen to my development team with regards to their vast past experiences in mmo launches and development. Advice from engineering on head starts was they are extremely desired in order to test any last minute launch/deployment issues that “always” happen. So I did as much as possible to mitigate the potential p2w elements/issues while still adhering to sound development principles. Including designating which servers are head start servers. So wanna make sure we don’t “chop” this one as a mistake or misstep. Everything done is done to ensure a quality launch/product.[98] – Steven Sharif
NDA
Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2 releases are not covered by NDA (non-disclosure agreement).[102]
- Alpha-2 phase 1 with no NDA was released on October 25, 2024.[38]
- Alpha-2 testing prior to the full release of Alpha-2 will be mostly covered by NDA.[31]
- The verbal NDA on Alpha-2 Node wars spot testing with the Phoenix initiative was lifted on May 31, 2024.[104]
- The verbal NDA on Alpha-2 Firebrand spot testing with the Phoenix initiative was lifted on August 30, 2024.[105]
- The verbal NDA on Alpha-2 spot testing was lifted specifically for the Discussion Round: Episode 200 interview.[106]
- Verbal and written NDA on Alpha-2 spot testing was lifted by Steven Sharif on October 20, 2024.[107]
- Alpha-1 testing prior to the full release of Alpha-1 was mostly covered by NDA.[108][19]
- The developers will not necessarily announce when NDA testing starts.[32]
- We may not always announce when the NDA testing is, because we're not definitive how that testing is going to influence the future testing schedule; and we don't want to set the wrong expectation from a broader audience perspective on what they should be expecting with regards to testing.[32] – Steven Sharif
Participation
- Alpha-0 had over 2,500 participants.[109]
- Alpha-1 testing had approximately 9,600 participants as of August, 2018.[110][111] There were slightly over 13k participants as of May 31, 2021.[110] There were 5,300 unique logins during the 3 day weekend test of May 27, 2021.[110]
- Alpha-2 is expected to have over 100,000 participants.[112][113][114][115] Previously Alpha-1 and Alpha-2 were expected to have 10,000 participants.[116]
- Eventually that 3k CCU will grow to 5k, to 6k, to 8k until it lands somewhere between 8 to 10,000 per realm.[113] – Steven Sharif
- Beta-1 and Beta-2 were originally expected to have 27,000 participants.[116]
- Alpha and Beta participation was expected to grow with the sale of pre-order packs.[116]
Server wipes
Alpha and Beta server realms will be wiped prior to launch.[59]
- Persistence is the goal for Alpha-2 phase-3. The plan is to have new fresh start servers rather than wiping, if possible.[119][120]
- To be clear; The goal from this day forward with Alpha Two will be not to wipe. For phase 3, the goal is to have fresh start servers. This of course may change depending on what issues we find throughout testing.[119] – Steven Sharif
- The ongoing goal is to wipe as little as possible during testing.[83][76][77][78][79][73][80][121][122][80][81][82]
- Q: How often do we think we'll wipe in Alpha-2?
- A: As little as necessary. That is the goal.[77] – Steven Sharif
