A forced attack in Ashes of Creation is when a player presses Ctrl+F before they attack, or they hold Alt while they attack another non-corrupt player. This allows their attacks to be registered against that player. If the attacker is flagged as a non-combatant (green), they will become a combatant (purple) when their attack hits the other player.[1][2]

  • Pressing Ctrl+F on its own does not flag a player as a combatant. They must land a hit on a non-corrupt player in order to be flagged as a combatant.[2]
The reason for that is there's a benefit and a downside to flagging first: The benefit of flagging first is that you have landed a strike on an opponent; in some way shape or form that strike is going to likely damage them to a degree. But the downside is that anybody else around you now is carte blanche on destroying you without any penalties. So you're opening yourself up to attack per-se. The other downside of that is you are not- unless you're in a party or raid with the opponent you're attacking- in which case you then could attack them, but you will not see their hit point value. So there's a little bit of a risk if you're attacking an individual that you could kill them with the attack as well; and if you did kill them with the attack and they were a non-combatant you would gain corruption; and nobody wants to gain corruption, because corruption is a severely debilitating for a player.[2]
